Catholics often crawl on their knees to the cathedral for penance. Some times they will roll up their pants legs and crawl "bare knee" on cement or cobble stone for long distances to arrive at the cathedral as a form of "purifying" themselves before entering into the building that they consider to be the very presence of God.
