Second Installment of Tommie Gary's Thoughts
"THE GREATEST THEME"
A theme. You've got to have a theme. Any theme? Maybe not. One well thought out would be best. A theme that is revelant to the time; the era, the audience; the work. Your high school English teacher probably told you that you needed a 'topic sentence' for each new paragraph when you wrote an essay. It was there to tell what was about to happen or had happened, or was happening.
People who know I worded for a railroad for 35 years might find it odd that the theme of my life doesn't revolve around Locomotives or Cabooses or at least the extensive knowledge of that momenclature. Questions were. "What is the Horse Power of an SD60?" or "When was the last Dog-House Caboose used in freight service?" I once was able to tell you the probability of an unknown railcar number or series just by the color or size of it. Those days are long gone.
Everyone of us has a theme to our lives. I am no longer just "Tommie Gary-Railroad Clerk." Somewhere along the linei I became known as Cindy's husband. Later names were Shawn, Jeff and Lindsey's Dad. A few ladies called me "Coach" when their Softball teams played. And I proudly have become known as "Poppa" (married to "Nanna".) to three small grandchildren.
But just a year ago our daughter asked me to help her come up with a them for the new Chidren's Ministry at their church. The very first thought that came to our minds was JESUS JUNCTION. It seemed to be a wonderful theme. Foreman Jane and Conductor Joe are the hosts. SOme of the characters revolve around names like 'Depot Dog' and even "CARMAN San Diego." We even wrote a song to use: "Get On Board for the Ride of Your Life-the Jesus Junction Train." Now there's a theme you can stand by. It's a great hit. The kids love it!
It seems that the Railroad has had quite an influence in my life after all. The GREATEST THEME continues on in with great hope.
I know that the Railroads continue to change every day. Many things you learn and use and remember will pass away with new technology entering your world. Be influenced by everything around you. Make your theme the GREATEST ONE remembering each day that you serve. 2 Peter 3:13, 18 (TNIV) "...But in keeping with His promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells...v.18...grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever! Amen."
Stop, Look and Listen - there's a theme coming down the track.
